VILLAGE LOTTERY -- The winning number on Saturday May 31 was 21. The lucky winner of £25 is John Warbey.

WHACKY WALKERS -- Blue sky, sun shining and a temperature to match the Mediterranean was the order of the day for the brave 22 walkers who set off from the car park of the Portway Inn, Staunton on Wye on Saturday, May 31. I say brave, because after two hours of walking along lanes and across fields in the noon-day sun it was sheer relief to put one's body on to a chair and taste the pleasure of the magic fluid served at this hostelry on our return. The walking party made a very colourful group dressed as they were in their summer shorts and tops (and that was just the men). At one point, late in the walk, the thought of people moving West in America in their covered wagons crossed the mind as the party moved in single file across a field. However, well before that we had stopped and looked inside St Mary's church at Staunton on Wye with its oil lamps and simple decor. Some excitement for a number of our group as they caught sight of a grass snake. Wonderful views, very easy walking, good company and finished off with a drink and a bite to eat. What better way to spend a Saturday morning?
