THREE Herefordshire retailers who were caught selling cigarettes to children have been fined by Hereford Magistrates Court.

Raghvir Singh, of Hunderton Stores, Hereford, and Karen Glanville, of Brampton Stores, Ross-on-Wye, were each fined £250. Susan Hatton, of P & SE Hatton, Whitecross Road, Hereford, was fined £150.

The prosecutions followed a 'test purchasing survey' by Herefordshire Council's Trading Standards Service during October last year. A number of retailers throughout the county were visited by 14 year olds who attempted, sometimes successfully, to buy cigarettes.

Of the 47 premises visited, eight sold cigarettes to a child under the legally permitted age. This amounts to approximately 17 per cent of retailers targeted who were found to be breaking the law. The total costs incurred by the three retailers amounted to £782.31.
