HEREFORDSHIRE Nature Trust is appealing to Hereford Times readers to assist not only with their on-going house sparrow survey, but also with surveys of insects in old orchard and with water shrews.
An 'old orchard' insect training day was held on Saturday, May 3 with the help of local insect experts Dr Michael Harper and Jonathan Cooter.
The volunteers have already made a number of interesting discoveries in the first five old orchards surveyed. (Insects looked for include the noble chafer beetle, red-belted clearwing moth, mistletoe weevil and the mistletoe tortrix moth, the rare mistletoe tortrix having a special place as a species discovered new to science in Herefordshire, while the mistletoe weevil was first recorded in Britain from Herefordshire as recently as August 2000).
Interested volunteers are needed to help with ongoing survey effort, contact Ross Andrew at Herefordshire Nature Trust on 01432 356872for details.
