A FORMER Police officer who served the county for nearly half a century has celebrated his 100th birthday.
Cyril Hoskins, who retired in 1972, is still remembered by Hereford police for his long service and dedication to the constabulary.
To mark his birthday last Friday, Cyril spent the day with his family and met Herefordshire's divisional commander, Chief Superintendent Guy Rutter.
Cyril, collar number 119, joined Hereford City Police on September 1, 1924, where his father was serving as a detective inspector. In 1947, Cyril was promoted to sergeant. He was one of the first to receive a medal for long and meritorious service, awarded in 1953.
Partial retirement on September 1, 1960, saw him appointed to the First Police Reserve with two other officers. He took up his post at the police garage and remained there until he finally retired from service in 1972.
Chief Supt Rutter said: "This is a wonderful day for Cyril and his family and on behalf of West Mercia Constabulary I congratulate him on his 100th birthday.Cyril's dedication to the police service is admirable as is his total commitment to serving the county of Herefordshire and making it a safer place."
