A SAFER school run and a new leisure complex are top priorities for Ross-on-Wye's new mayor.

Councillor John Davies is determined finally to make some inroads into solving the traffic chaos affecting parents of children at Ashfield Park Primary School.

He describes the junction connecting Walford Road to Archenfield Road as a real trouble spot and knows urgent action is needed.

"It is a real nightmare down there at the moment, especially during the rush hours. The lollipop lady has nearly been run over on several occasions," he said.

"It is something I have wanted to sort out for a long time now, and the first thing we need to do is compile the results from a survey on the area."

The 46-year-old, who has lived in the town for most of his life after being born at Brockhampton, would also like to get a leisure centre in Ross to combine the arts with recreation.

However, the former Ross Secondary Modern student, knows it will take time to group together the various partners in the ambitious project.
