Hereford City Cricket Club's challenge for promotion from the Crusader Worcestershire County League Division 2 has suffered a major setback with the loss of overseas player Runel Agard.

The Carlton CC fast bowler has flown back to Barbados after suffering a painful back injury and will not be returning to Hereford.

The West Indian returned home for treatment after making just three league appearances for the city club.

Agard was their main strike bowler and his departure is a massive blow because league regulations prevent them from registering another overseas player this season.

Hereford vice-chairman Ashley Brown said: "Runel looked a very good player and, because we had been playing on wet wickets, we had not seen the best of him.

"His departure is major disappointment because he was our main strike bowler and we now have to rely on our own resources. We desperately need a new strike bowler."
