JOHN RONE, Kyrle Street, Hereford:

I think the worst places are some of the side roads off Commercial Street, which look really disgusting and look at the entrance doorway next to Hereford's top night-spot, it's filthy.

Anon, Hereford:

A WALK through the underpasses public footway would shock many car users - graffiti, many lights not working, dirt rubbish, dark, stench of urine - have any councillors walked through lately?

Jeanette Bates, Vine Tree Close, Withington:

I have written numerous letters on this subject to Herefordshire Council, with suggestions how the area could be made to look attractive for our visitors and locals alike.

The replies state there is not enough money in the budget.

Here are some of my views:

Remove all uninteresting greenery from the flower beds, replace with summer bedding and fill as many available pots and tubs with same.

Add a three tier planter along with the lovely iron hanging basket tree, rearrange the seating, e.g. flower tub either side of a seat. This will result in a wonderful blaze of colour which this main area has been badly lacking.

Recently I was appalled to see the precinct in such a cluttered mess, with the Farmers' market and fairground rides etc.

How can this be allowed in what should be the focal, and most important part of our City. Shame on who is responsible - we are a historic town not a seaside resort.

PETER MOHAN, Web Treet Avenue, Hereford:

THE May Fair has been part of Herefordshire life for generations, as was the Hereford Regatta,Hereford City Show, Hereford Carnival and the Wednesday Cattle Market and the monthly horse sales.

Sadly gone or going "down to progress" .

As the caption on the next page said "Don't rubbish our city",

Is this how it's going to be?
