THE two articles in the Hereford Times (29.5.03) regarding Hereford Hospital staffing should have been on the same page, as they provide the answer to Jeremy Millar and Jan Steven's problems with cost improvements.
Students about to qualify could be placed in the areas where the overworked staff are (everywhere?).
Levels of sickness would fall because nurses would be able to perform duties properly and safely, take breaks to maintain safety and personal health, leave work on time at the end of the their shifts and take holidays at reasonable intervals.
Giving staff substantive contracts would encourage loyalty to the employer and provide security for the employee.
The wait for the review of staff levels by Price Waterhouse (costly!) should have been completed. The obvious shortfall supplied by agency staff (vital!) could have been avoided if everyone in management kept to a timescale and provided professional and safe cover in all areas for the people of Hereford. The nurses could show you how ... but sorry, there aren't enough of them!
