DYMOCK Grange Golf Club held its eighth annual men's club championship last weekend.

Played in glorious sunshine with a light breeze, the pin positions and hard fairways made it very tricky, the Old Course had never been this tough to shoot low scores in September, coupled with the fact that two of the best players were out injured, the competition was wide open.

On day one there were nine players within five shots of the lead with Gerald Cooke, from Bosbury, taking a one shot advantage over Gareth Diggins and a further shot back vice-captain Kevin Marschall and Mark Gould.

Day two and the leaders going out last with the wind picking up and even tougher pin positions, saw both Mark Gould and Kevin Marschall have one bad hole to be taken out of the running.

With no-one else able to put in a low score it was down to the two leaders.

In the end Gareth Diggins from Ledbury managed to hold together a superb round and turn around the lead to become the club champion by six shots, with Gerald in the runners up spot.

Lee Andrews from Gloucester had two steady rounds to jump into third place.

The net championship is usually a very open one but after the first day the captain's son, 13-year-old Sean Linnie from Malvern, took a seven shot lead with his best round to date and a new junior course record. (gross 84) net 62.

That round was also good enough to become the junior champion, held over 18 holes.

On the second day however Sean couldn't keep the lead and it was the turn of Leon Sturge from Ledbury to have a good day. Having had a net 71 on day one he followed that with a (gross 88) net 66 to pick up the net championship trophy.

Sean easily held on to second place, six shots clear Of Bruce Avison, Rob Kington and Mark Gould.

The captain thanked the ladies for their help in organising both days and the greens staff for their hard work in very difficult conditions leading up to the competition.
