ENCOURAGING students to fulfil their potential in a school at the heart of Kington's community is the priority, head teacher Jon Barry proudly said at Lady Hawkins' certificate evening.

During his address, Mr Barry said Lady Hawkins' has been officially designated a 'community school' which, he believes, reflects its true role.

"I would like see Lady Hawkins as 'the centre for learning at the heart of the community', providing a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum for our students and the opportunity for all the community to improve their skills and knowledge."

Welcoming the school's guest of honour, leader of the council, Roger Phillips, Mr Barry expressed how proud the school is of Mr Phillips achievements - a pupil from 1970 -1977.

Highlighting many aspects of the school year, Mr Barry spoke of technology and music challenge days, trips abroad, the publication of a book written predominantly by the students and the production of the Wizard of Oz.

He was also proud of the 'full educational experience' provided to students that included a range of activities outside the classroom.

GCSE results were the best ever recorded with the percentage gaining five or more A* to C grades increasing to 63 %.
