CHRISTMAS LIGHTS - The Christmas season begins in Knighton with the switching on of the Christmas lights on Saturday. This event is jointly organised by Knighton Town Council and Knighton Chamber of Commerce, and will begin at 5.45pm with Knighton Town Silver Band playing at the Clock Tower. Knighton's High Street will be closed for the occasion. At 6 pm the lights in the main street will be switched and the entrants in the children's fancy dress competition will be judged. This year the prize is for the best dressed Christmas cracker, and there will be separate classes for boys and girls with, in each of these two sections. Once the judging is finished the Town Crier, who is also this year's Mayor, Councillor Derek Price, will be joined by Father Christmas, and together they will lead the grand procession of Christmas crackers down Broad Street to Brookside Square to the accompaniment of the Town Band.

At Brookside Square the Junior Mayor will switch on the remaining lights and Father Christmas will take up position in his grotto from where he will distribute small presents to every child present at the event. The choirs of Knighton, Beguildy and Clun primary schools will then sing. Wynn's Funfair is visiting Knighton for the switching on of the Christmas lights and will be on the Norton Arms Car Park.

DISPLAY OF CRIBS - There will be a display of cribs in Saint Edward's Church on Friday, November 28, Saturday 29 and Sunday 30. This year there will be a new feature, the angel tree, open to the public from 10 am to 5 pm.

BAND CONCERT - Knighton Town Silver Band will hold a concert with Llandovery Male Voice Choir on Saturday, November 29, at Knighton Community Centre. The concert will start at 7.30pm. Tickets can be obtained at The Bookshop or from 01547 520244.

EXTRAVAGANZA - Knighton's 2003 Extravaganza will be on Thursday, December 11. Judging of the window dressing competition on the theme of Victorian Christmas is on Friday, November 28, and will be announced on Saturday, November 29. On December 11, Father Christmas will lead his Christmas parade through the town. The fancy dress parade will be part of the competition, and, like the windows, will have a Victorian theme. Prizes will given for the best Victorian costume.

CHRISTMAS FAIR - Knighton Macmillan Cancer Relief will hold its annual Christmas Fair in Knighton Church Hall on Saturday November at 3.00pm. Father Christmas will pay a visit during the event.

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR - Saint Edward's Church will hold its annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, November 29, at 3 pm in the Church Hall.

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Raffle winners at last weeks meeting of Knighton and District Wednesday Club in the Social room, Saint Edward's Close, were Mrs

Phil Cadwallader, Mrs M. Payne, Mrs E. Conway, Mrs N. Barrett, Mrs B. Davies, Mr D. Lewis, Mrs V. Parker-Smith, Mrs R. Parry and Mrs W. Plant. Mrs N. Barrett and Mrs E. Conway were helpers, and Mrs Conway was caller for bingo. On Wednesday, November 26, the Wednesday Club is organising a coach trip to Hereford. The bus will leave Bowling Green Lane at 9.15am and begin its return journey from Hereford at 4pm. Anyone interested should telephone 01547 528305.

BOWLING CLUB - The ladies of Knighton Bowling Club held their whist drive on Thursday, November 6, at the Club House in Church Road. The MC was Mrs S, Moorhouse, and prizes were presented by Mrs M. Shepherd. Thanks were given by Mrs S. Moorhouse. The next whist drive will be held in the Club House today (Thursday).

EAST RADNOR PARISH - Sunday services (Christ the King): 9.30am Eucharist at Whitton (Father Andrew Pearce with guest preacher, Dr David Wilson), 11am Family Eucharist and Baptism at Knighton (Father Andrew Pearce); 11am Sung Eucharist at Norton (Father Paul Gerrard). There is a daily Eucharist at Norton Church at 6pm, except for Tuesdays when it is at 11.30am. The Saturday Eucharist will be in honour of Saint Andrew, Norton's patron saint. There will be no Wednesday morning Eucharist at Knighton this week.

METHODIST CHURCH - This Sunday morning worship at Knighton Methodist Church will be at 11am. Mr I Mason of Weeping Cross, Stafford will lead the service.
