A newly-restored stained glass window at the Roman Catholic Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Ledbury, has been consecrated, along with the rest of the building.

The Archbishop of Cardiff, the Most Rev Peter Smith, carried out the service on Sunday (November 16) and all this week flags were flying at the building in celebration.

The altar of the New Street church was consecrated in 1976, but not the whole building. Completion of the new window provided a perfect opportunity to have this done.

Church spokesman Una Morgan said: "This time, the consecration covered the whole works, including the beautiful stained glass window showing St Elizabeth of Hungary, recently installed in the church.

"It was a moving service, with the Abbot of Belmont and Father Pat Coyne, the parish priest, celebrating mass together."

The window was left to the church several years ago by a local family who moved to France. It is is thought to be French and dates form the 19th Century.

Following the consecration, the Archbishop met parishoners at a buffet in the parish room.

He was presented with a cheque for £300 from the parish for the Catholic Children's Society, of which he is the president.

n The Ledbury Catholic Church Christmas bazaar will take place at St Katherine's Hall, Ledbury, on November 29, at 10am, and will be the 50th festive bazaar run by the church in Ledbury.

Parishioner Betty Hollings has attended every one and recalled how the first one took place in the Market House, to raise money towards a new Catholic church in town.

She said: "We raised £120 then and we have increased that to around £2,000 each year. We think we have done very well."
