Volunteers are needed from the Bromyard area to carry out a major wildlife survey.

The ponds and newts survey will be conducted over a third of Herefordshire in the spring, in all parishes along the River Frome.

The project has just received a £41,000 grant from the LEADER+ programme, a European Com-munity initiative that funds grassroots schemes in rural communities.

Based at Docklow, it will monitor the population of great crested newts in ponds.

Co-ordinator Will Watson said he needed people with ponds to be surveyed and volunteers to help with the work.

"The great crested newt is one of the flagship species of Britain and we have a special responsibility to look after it," he said.

Mr Watson said he hoped to eventually establish a network of pond wardens to liaise with parish councils.
