VOLUNTARY workers have been checking out new wooden benches at a South Wye woodland project to promote healthier lifestyles.
South Wye and Belmont Community Environmental Project (CEP) is helping to create a nicer place to live in one of the most deprived areas of Hereford.
Newton Coppice now has several green oak benches made by volunteers from Southgate Court, Redhill, at a weekly carpentry workshop also provided by the CEP.
The woodland project, created by Herefordshire Sustain opposite Belmont Abbey, received a grant of £30,000 from the Forestry Commission last year. Volunteers aim to improve physical access with better quality paths suitable for wheelchair users and restore the neglected hazel coppice.
Belmont was declared the most deprived ward in the county early last year, based on national facts and figures that take into account factors such as income, car ownership and numbers to each room.
The project, entitled Wye Wood, has involved experienced coppice workers and community groups.
