HEREFORDSHIRE'S David Park got among the prize-winners when he finished in a tie for 20th place in the Dunhill Championship, played at near 6,000 feet over the Houghton Golf Club course, Johannes-burg.

Park fired a 12-under par 276 (67, 72, 65, 72) in his second start of the 2004 European Tour campaign to win prize-money of £5,300.

Germany's Marcus Siem claimed his maiden victory in the co-sanctioned event with a dramatic sudden-death win over Frenchmen Gregory Havret and Raphael Jacquelin after all three had finished on a 22-under par 266.

After missing the cut in the South African Open the previous week, Park's welcome return to form lifted him to 47th in the Volvo Order of Merit.

This week he will aim to build on this encouraging start when he competes in the Johnnie Walker Classic in Bangkok, Thailand, where he will be up against a galaxy of international stars, including World number two Ernie Els, British Open winner Ben Curtis and US Open winner Shaun Micheel.

n A Texas Scramble is a flattering form of golf where some extraordinary scores are possible, but can anyone recollect a better score than the 16-under-par gross score of 54 recorded by the Kington quartet of Phil Jordan, Rob Pritchard, Colin Fensom and George Smith?

They took advantage of a beautiful Spring-like morning at Bradnor Hill to produce their birdie blitz and carded 16 birdies and just two pars in their round.

Needless to say they won the Winter Team Scramble with a score of 54-4.2-49.8, with second-placed Joe James, Ian Macleod, Phil Price and Doug Taylor five shots behind with what would normally have been a very impressive 59-5.2-53.8.

It took a card countback to settle the latest Winter better-ball stableford with Martin Bufton and Mike Waygood pipping Murray Mackintosh and Phil Eggerton after both pairs had posted 47 points.

Senior Three-man Scramble: 1 Eddy Winstone, Bryan Betts and John Weaver 44 pts, 2 Richard Hughes, John Williams and David Mains 44, 3 Peter Burgoyne, Reg Burgoyne and Frank Goodwin 44.

Ladies' Winter Accumulator (12 holes), silver: Jenny Kelly 25 points; bronze: Jill Wictome 23.

n Bob Cook, playing off a 13 handicap, and John Mitchell each recorded an impressive 42 stableford points to win their respective sections in the third qualifier for Ross-on-Wye's Barnfield Trophy final, to be played in March. The qualifier had been postponed from earlier in the month because of bad weather.

The eight qualifiers were, (0-14): Bob Cook 42 pts, Paul Warwick 40, Gwynne Morgan 40, Nigel Montague 39; (15-28): John Mitchell 42, David Johnstone 39, Richard Matthews 38, Bob Hughes 38.

n Belmont played a special stableford in which the partners' scores were multiplied together on each hole.

Results: 1 Des Davies and Colin Tolley 75 pts, 2 Brian Stringer and John Lewthwaite 72, 3 Ben Lloyd and Phil Skyrme 70.

Seniors' stableford pairs better-ball: 1 Paul Gosling and Ivor Prosser 44 pts, 2 Mick Loader and Alf Boswell 43.

n Burghill Valley ladies played an unusual form of medal competition where they deducted their ages from their gross scores, not their handicaps.

Results: 1 Rosie Cole 27, 2 Barbara O'Sullivan 27, 3 Tilly Hare 31, 4 Mary Crockett 31, 5 Christine Baldwin 32, 6 Brenda Tingley 33.

n Ann Wheatstone posted the top score of 26 points in the Herefordshire GC Ladies' latest 13-hole January stableford.
