Gloucestershire Coun-ty Council is proposing a 30mph speed limit on the main road to Newent through Clifford's Mesne.

The restriction would also apply on a number of other feeder roads that form an approximate loop around the village.

Currently, the national 60mph speed limit applies on the village's main roads and the county council is keen to get a lower limit applied for road safety reasons.

Peter Waters, the county's area traffic manager, said the physical nature of the roads ensure that most drivers passing through stay well below the 60mph limit.

He added accident statistics did not point to a problem in the village.

Despite this, the county council has submitted proposals to cut the limit to Newent Town Council for comment.

A 30mph limit through and around Clifford's Mesne would entail new signage on the earmarked roads at 250 metre intervals, on alternating sides.

Town councillor Peter Street, who lives in Clifford's Mesne, said he believed there was support in the village for a reduction in the speed limit.

Newent town councillors, who discussed the measure at a meeting on Monday, said that the views of the people of Clifford's Mesne should be gathered before they could respond to the proposal.

Coun Street said he would put a piece up on the village notice board and assess the reaction. Villagers can also phone town clerk, Deirdre Rosser, on 01531 820638.
