JOHN Newman was determined not to show himself up, but pride came before a fall.

The veteran county councillor injured himself scrambling for victory at the world record egg and spoon race attempt in High Town, Hereford, last Saturday, organised by the Ready, Steady, Win charity, which raises funds to support Herefordshire's young sporting talent.

Bruised John is big enough to admit the fall was his own fault.

He clipped a cone while 'cutting up on the inside'.

The 'spring chicken' was going for broke in trying to bounce back from bringing up the rear last year.

Sadly, he again ended the event with egg on his face . . . and jacket . . . and trousers.

Rueful John has spent the week recovering from a badly bruised wrist and dented dignity.

Next time, he says, he'll leave the competition to the youngsters."It's time to accept I'm 66, not 16," he said.

Like John, the record attempt fell short.

Jo Jones of Ready, Steady, Win had hoped racers would rally to her attempt to beat the world record for the biggest number of participants in an egg and spoon race - 674.

About 200 were tempted to try its 360m route round High Town and Saturday's wild weather didn't help.

Better things are expected when Ready, Steady, Win has another go at the record next Tuesday when, more than 2,000 youngsters from schools across the county are expected to take part in simultaneous egg and spoon races.
