Hereford Whitecross Club enjoyed a highly successful day as part of the LTA's Play Tennis 2004 initiative.

The club welcomed more than 150 people through the doors with ages ranging from four to 75.

And plenty of people liked what they saw with five new adult members and 14 new junior members signing up.

Visitors were able to take part in a fastest serve competition which saw Byron Wallin win the senior prize with 98 mph and Harrison Probert the junior with 84 mph.

Probert and another Hereford youngster, Siobhan Gordon, took part in an exhibition match which Probert won 6-3.

During the day £140 was raised towards providing benches for the top three of the club's seven courts.

"The day was a big success and we're hoping it will be the same for our family tournament on June 15," said coach Andrew Griffiths.
