Luctonians 86 pts Camp Hill 3

SOME incisive running which produced 11 tries and a superb goal-kicking display from Jeremy Wheadon gave Luctonians a runaway win in the first round of the North Midlands Cup.

Wheadon was at his brilliant best, converting all the tries and also kicking three penalties for a personal tally of 31 points.

Although victory could be anticipated by Luctonians, the margin of success could not as Camp Hill play their rugby two levels below their hosts and are currently joint leaders of their league, so an intriguing contest was expected.

But straight from the kick-off it was apparent that the visitors were in for a torrid 80 minutes as they struggled to contain the pace and power of the home side.

It took only nine minutes for the Luctonians to open the scoring with a Wheadon penalty.

Straight from the restart Camp Hill missed a penalty opportunity before a second Wheadon penalty put Luctonians in the driving seat.

In the space of 15 minutes the home side ran in four tries, one each for skipper Steve Saint, Steve Jaques, Effron Heather and Mark Panniers, with Wheadon adding all four conversions and another penalty.

Camp Hill's only response was a penalty to make the half-time score 37-3.

The second half was completely one sided with the visitors only making the Luctonians' half of the field from the restarts after the further seven tries which the home side scored.

The second-half try scorers were Panniers (3), Heather (2), Saint and Ben McGowan. Wheadon's kicking completed the rout.
