Owners of shops, offices, pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants face fines of a minimum of £5,000, bad publicity and loss of business because of their failure to comply with new legislation designed to improve accessibility for people with a range of disabilities.
The Disability Discrimination Act marks major change in the rights of people with disabilities. It puts the onus on businesses to treat people equally.
Richard Fallon, executive director of the Out of Hours training consultancy said: "The legislation is about far more than physical accessibility for people in wheelchairs but also many other disability issues like communications including websites and service delivery.''
Help is at hand with experts, including disability groups, lawyers and designers coming together to offer practical advice to businesses. A special one-day seminar designed to improve awareness of the law and provide practical advice will be staged at the Paragon Hotel in Birmingham on Saturday, February 26.
