Headington Amateurs 2 Ross Town 1

A BRAVE battle by Ross just failed to gain the South Herefordshire side a GLS Hellenic League Division 1 West point.

In the first period, the Ross defence of Andrew Green, Glenn Capewell and Tom Phillips kept the home side at bay with goalkeeper Rich Newman producing a couple of good saves on the rare occasions that Witney did break through.

At the other end, Ross forwards Dave Skipp and Dewi Stuart worked hard to keep the Witney defence at full stretch but just when it seemed as if the half would end goalless, Jasion Maciak produced a fine left-foot strike to beat Newman from 20 yards.

A powerful close-range header by Matthew Phillips from a corner extended the home side's lead 11 minutes into the second period and Newman had to produce a fine save to prevent Phillips from adding a third shortly afterwards.

With five minutes to go, Ross set up an exciting finish when Skipp forced home his eighth league goal of the season in just six starts but after that, try as they might, a further breakthrough proved beyond them.
