FOOTBALL legend John Charles returned to Hereford on Tuesday to sign copies of his new autobiography for dozens of doting fans.

The former Wales, Leeds United, Juventus and Roma football genius spent a full hour signing copies of 'King John' in Waterstone's .

'The Gentle Giant' is regarded as one of the greatest footballers that Britain has ever produced and was player-manager at Hereford from 1967-71.

He said: "It's nice to be back. I enjoyed my stay at Hereford, the supporters were very good. I always look out for their results and it would be good if they could get back into the Football League."

GRAHAM TURNER recalls 'The Gentle Giant': "It was good to see John Charles make a return to Hereford this week. Throughout the game he was regarded in the highest esteem, both in Britain and in Italy.

"He was worshipped in Italy and, in fact, at all the clubs for whom he played, including the time he spent, here, at Hereford.

"I don't think a 'Gentle Giant' is a true description of John. Perhaps he was a gentleman off the park but anything but a gentle giant on it.

"I can recall playing against him at Edgar Street in a Welsh Cup match. I was a young kid playing as a central defender for Chester and he played up front for Hereford.

"He knocked me from pillar to post but would always help me off the floor with the encouraging words that there was plenty more of that to come.

"I learnt at close hand, even in the twilight of his career, of his heading ability and his uncanny knack of appearing to hang in the air.

"On a couple of occasions I thought I was going to beat him in the air but I think I can remember heading his knee cap such was his power.

"He was a truly world class player, it was my privilege to have been photographed with him on Tuesday."
