Hereford United face the stiff challenge of Premiership new-boys Wolverhampton Wanderers at Edgar Street in their first pre-season friendly this Monday, writes Ian Morgan.

United boss Graham Turner is looking forward to the friendly against the club which he guided from the old Fourth Division to the old Second Division between 1986 and March 1994.

The Wolves players reported back for pre-season training on Tuesday and manager Dave Jones has been busy in the transfer market over the past week.

The former Southampton boss has splashed out £1million on 25-year-old Portuguese midfield star Silas from Leiria and snapped up 25-year-old Nigerian international Isaac Okoronkwo on a free transfer.

Former Arsenal player Oleg Luzhny has passed a medical examination and, subject to obtaining a new work permit, will complete his transfer.

Turner said: "Our pitch looks in excellent condition and it's a very good opening match for us and our supporters. Wolves have also got a game at Bristol Rovers on the same night, so they will be splitting their squad down the middle. It would be great if some of their new signings were given the opportunity to make their club debuts at Edgar Street."

He added: "From our point of view, training has been going very well and everyone is looking ahead to Monday."

Striker Steve Guinan is still recovering from knee surgery, but Turner is expected to field new signings David Brown and Jordan King, as well as several trialists.

Grosvenor Park duo Justin Rowe and John Daniels will be missing, having snubbed United to link up with former Hereford chief scout and director Ron Jukes at Shropshire rivals Telford. Arrangements had been made for the pair to spend the pre-season programme with Hereford, but they have opted to have trials at the New Bucks Head.

Although Turner has not added to his two summer signings, he is awaiting replies from an experienced striker and an experienced right-back.

Admission prices for home friendlies will be £7 adults and £3 concessions, while Conference adult prices will be £11 seated and £9 standing - an increase of £1 on last season.
