Hereford United director of football Graham Turner has spoken to a young goalkeeper about joining the Edgar Street outfit for next season, writes IAN MORGAN.

The former Wolves chief was not prepared to name the player but said that the talks were at a preliminary stage.

Apart from a young goalkeeper, Turner wants to bolster the United squad by signing a striker, an experienced midfielder and a right-back.

Meanwhile, Hereford defender Michael Rose has been named in the Nationwide Conference team of the season. Rose, who joined United from Chester City, was named by Conference managers as the most impressive left-back in the division.

Former United winger Michael McIndoe, now with Third Division Yeovil Town, was voted Conference 'Player of the Season'.

The Nationwide Conference have voted in favour of a squad budgeting system, which will come into force for next season based on an individual club's turnover.

Turner said that, under the new legislation, Hereford will be limited to spending £400,000 a year on the squad's wages, with the first £40,000 going towards National Insurance contributions.

He said: "Squad budgeting should lead to clubs being more cautious. It will enable us to compete on a level playing field with other clubs in the Conference, like Chester and Stevenage, who are spending a lot of money on players' wages."

The Conference has also announced that member clubs which go into administration or enter a CVA will face a maximum 12-point deduction.

United have arranged pre-season friendlies away to Grosvenor Park on Thursday, July 17, 7.45pm; Ludlow Town, Thursday, July 24, 7.30pm; and Bromyard Town, Saturday, July 26, 3pm.
