MANY of British football's greatest names gathered in Leeds on Monday to pay a final tribute to John Charles, whose funeral took place at St-Peter-at-Leeds parish church.

The Charlton brothers , Sir Alex Ferguson and Denis Law, as well as the Gentle Giant's old Juventus team-mate Omar Sivori, were just a few of those who paid their respects to the man who was Hereford United's player-manager from 1967-71.

Tributes were paid by broadcaster John Helm, John Toshack, who played alongside Charles at Cardiff City, and Professor Geraint Jenkins, who described Charles as 'the greatest Welsh footballer of all time'.

The funeral party then moved to Elland Road where the club's West Stand has been re-named 'The John Charles Stand' in honour of a footballer who was revered as much for his talent as his sportsmanship both in this country and in Italy.
