THE only Hereford United player to win full international honours whilst plying his trade at Edgar Street will be remembered for his immaculate ball control, writes Ian Morgan

Brian Evans, who died last week at the age of 60 following a short illness, lit up Edgar Street with a number of man-of-the-match performances and some stunning individual goals.

The winger, who made 58 appearance for Hereford between August 1973 and February 1975, created his own piece of club history in being selected for Wales in a World Cup qualifier in Poland in September 1973.

Evans, who had just joined Here-ford for their first season in Division 3, played for Wales in front of a partisan 120,000 crowd against a Polish team that included future United defender Adam Musial.

The Poles won 3-0 and went on to top the qualification group above England and, sadly, it proved to be the last of Evans' seven Welsh international caps.

Former Hereford manager Colin Addison, who brought Evans to Edgar Street, said: "When I signed Brian I knew that we needed a little bit more quality in our side and he was a Welsh international. He added another dimension to our play and he was a smashing lad, a tremendous player with a tremendous technique."

Evans netted a total of 11 league and cup goals for United and marked his debut in the 3-1 win at Grimsby Town by gliding past five defenders before finishing emphatically.

He also scored a memorable solo goal the following month in a 1-1 draw with Watford when he dribbled around two visiting defenders and dummied a third before placing a shot into the far corner.

And in the December the Welshman produced another superb solo effort on a frozen pitch against visiting Walsall, breaking from the half-way line to score the final goal in a 3-1 win.

He was part of the Bulls' FA Cup giant-killing side that knocked West Ham United out of the FA Cup at the third round stage in January 1974.

Evans began his career at Swansea City where he played 343 league matches, scored 57 goals, and was a member of the 1964 team which reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
