Projects tackling drug misuse are being launched in Bromyard.

The Bromyard Area Drugs Forum is working with young people to reduce the problem.

Donna Kemp, community development worker for Herefordshire's Drug Forums, said: "The projects are currently in their infancy, but the forum is trying to work with young people and provide them with activities in the town.

"If they have something alternative to do, like playing football, then it decreases the likelihood of them using drugs."

The forum meets once a month and is also working on programmes to raise drug awareness and provide drug education for parents and young people.

Ms Kemp said it was not only youngsters who used drugs. However, she said Bromyard did not have a major drug problem.

"The problem in Bromyard is no bigger than anywhere else and the fear of drugs can often be worse then the reality," she said. "We have seven other forums across Herefordshire."

Ms Kemp said the forum was a valuable way of tackling drug issues, because its members live and work in the town, so know any problems first hand.

The forum was set up in September 2003 and consists of representatives from the church, police, probation service, town council and the Herefordshire Youth Service, as well as teachers and health visitors.

Town councillor Nick Cronin said: "Bromyard is no different to any other small town. We've accepted that we have a problem with drugs but we don't have any systems for helping people affected.

"I'm not a member of the forum myself, but I think anything that helps deal with the issue is a good idea."
