THE Welsh Dragon will be flying high at Edgar Street after all - following a flag fiasco that sparked frantic activity on Hereford United Football Club's official web- site.

Angry fans flooded the official fans' forum and some even threatened to boycott matches after a club official asked United's mascot, Billy the Bull, to withdraw the Welsh flag from his colourful, multi-national collection at Saturday's home match with Chester City.

After much on-line debate, however, the Wales flag was evident at Tuesday's home match with Yeovil Town and it now appears to be there to stay.

United chairman Graham Turner explained: "It was politely asked for the flag to be taken down on Saturday following some complaints from our supporters. I think it's an issue that the club could have done without, particularly when the team has been doing so well. From the club's point of view, we are stuck between a rock and a hard place."

He added: "There are multi-national flags above the Legends Bar and I cannot see a problem with a Wales flag being there.

"As long as the flags don't upset the board advertisers then I don't think there is a problem. The issue was mentioned on the web-site and it seems to have been blown into a massive incident."

United's mascot, whose real name is Darren Coates, said: "The flags are put up to represent Hereford fans who cannot attend matches. We have 14 flags altogether, from Sweden to Algeria. My own feeling is that if I could not put up the Welsh flag, then I would take them all down."

The subject was up for discussion by United's directors at a board meeting yesterday afternoon.
