HEREFORDSHIRE student band The Myth has reached the final six of the BBC Midlands Today School of Rock competition.

The six put the band together while they were pupils at Fairfield High School, Peterchurch, and have been playing together for over three years, drumming up quite a following in the county.

The band writes all its own material, which it describes as 'retro but original funk rock, underlaid with jazz, blues and soul'.

The six recorded their first six-track EP at the Royal National College studios last December and, once A-levels are out of the way, the lads hope to spend the summer performing at festivals.

The Myth's performance for the TV competition is being filmed on Saturday at the BBC's Mailbox studios in central Birmingham and the competition will run during the Midlands Today programme (6.30-7pm) next Monday to Thursday, with the winners being selected by public vote.

The band has the chance of winning a day in a recording studio, airplay on Radio One, a video of one of the songs and £600 worth of musical instruments for the school.
