Wellington 0
Market Drayton 2
ALTHOUGH Wellington battled hard, they were forced to concede victory to high-flying Market Drayton who demonstrated why they are in contention for West Midland League Premier Division honours with a well-drilled performance and deserved victory.
Both sides played attacking football from the off with the pace of Matt Williams and Kenny Styles causing problems for the visitors but the final touch proved elusive.
Wellington suffered a set back when midfielder Lee Ferneyhough, making his first start for several months, was forced to retire with a hamstring strain. This unsettled the hosts with Drayton seizing the opportunity to dispossess Peter Wallace in mid-field and break quickly to fire the opening goal.
After the break Wellington lifted their game. They almost levelled when Williams broke through but unfortunately the ball rebounded off an upright into the goalkeeper's arms with several home attackers well placed in the box.
The experienced visitors withstood the home pressure and effectively put the result beyond doubt when they took advantage of a mistimed tackle by central defender Mark Sutton to surge through and bag a second goal.
In spite of a late Wellington flurry, Drayton held out to claim a deserved win.
