The culmination of a community art project was celebrated in Stoke Lacy.

Representatives from the Village Art Markers project gathered at the village hall on Wednesday to unveil a mural on the outside wall.

It was created by local artist Mark De La Torre and depicts the village and surrounding fields in ceramic tiles.

Mr De La Torre was chosen from six applicants for the project, funded by the Market Towns Initiative, in November 2003.

He held workshops in the village, gathering ideas and artwork from residents, including school children and pensioners, for use in the final piece.

"I used a large Ordnance Survey map to create templates of each field," he said. "Some of the tiles are textured to show ploughed fields and all the contours. Enamel transfers of drawings are fired on to others."

Mr De La Torre said the mural represented the permanence of the landscape, which remains no matter how humans change it.
