Barwell 1 Westfields 0

BARWELL completed a Travel Factory Midland Alliance double over Westfields to follow up their early season 2-1 away win, but it was visiting goalkeeper Jon Pugh who kept the deficit to a single goal with a string of superb saves in the second half.

The decisive goal came in the third minute when Kevin Jinks conceded a right-wing corner. Scott Clamp sent over a swinging cross for Steve White to leap and power a header past Pugh.

Belying a poor home record which had produced only four victories, Barwell were only denied further first-half goals by a couple of excellent saves from Pugh.

Carl Adams twice went close and saw his fierce, low drive held at the foot of the post by Pugh, who minutes later punched clear a dangerous free-kick from Adams.

In spite of changes after the break it was all Barwell, with Pugh denying the home side with some excellent saves.

In quick succession he made a superb, point-blank stop from winger Craig Noble, and then made a fine one-handed save to thwart White who seemed certain to score from close range.

Derek Craddock had a late chance to grab a share of the points but blasted his 20-yard drive over the top, but it was Pugh who deservedly earned the plaudits at the final whistle.
