SAINT EDWARD'S CHURCH - Speaking at last Sunday's celebration of the Eucharist at Saint Edward's Church, Father Andrew Pearce, said that the Eucharist had been central to the worship of the Church from its earliest days to the present. Basing his sermon on the Gospel reading for the day - Luke's account of the encounter on the Road to Emmaus - Father Andrew said, "Jesus is revealed in the breaking of bread. This is why our church is Eucharistic." He regretted that, in the Anglican tradition, few wished to share in the Eucharist at the important points of their lives. "In the course of my ministry I have received very few requests to have the Eucharist at weddings and funerals." He added that, though the Eucharist was the sacrament of unity, it had become a source of division.

SPRING SALE - Saint Edward's Spring Sale, held last Saturday in Knighton Church Hall, raised £180. Father Andrew Pearce, Vicar of East Radnor, thanked everyone who helped to organise this event,

Raffle winners were Doreen Gammon, Mollie Spittles, Diana Rudge, Thomas Stevens and Jean Kilby.

CATHOLIC CHURCH - Father Morty O'Shea, SOLT, Priest in Charge of Knighton Catholic Church, paid tribute to Pope John Paul 2 in the church's weekly newsletter: "As the events surrounding Pope John Paul's death have unfolded - and particularly the funeral liturgy - we cannot but have a profound sense of gratitude to God for having bestowed on us such a wise and holy shepherd. The title John Paul the Great is gathering its own momentum in the light of his GREAT contribution to our time, proclaiming the primacy of the lordship of Jesus Christ and his solidarity with us in the Incarnation; his (John Paul's) resultant witness to hope even in times of severe trial; his defence of the Gospel in the face of the modern secular world; the innate dignity of the human person; the sacredness of human life from conception to natural death; a "preferential option" for the poor and the underprivileged; the value of suffering when it is united with the Passion of Christ; and much more."
