Leominster Town and Ewyas Harold continue to fight it out at the top of the Hereford Times Herefordshire League Premier Division after both achieved wins at the weekend.

Leaders Leominster still have a one-point advantage over the villagers but had to fight back after conceding an early goal to beat Fownhope 3-1 at Bridge Street Sports Centre.

The villagers piled on plenty of early pressure and received their reward when the Leominster defence was only able to half-clear a corner and Thabani Bhengu fired in from the edge of the area.

Minutes later, Blacky Smith seemed set to increase the Fownhope lead, only to see his shot booted off the line with goalkeeper Kevin McCall beaten.

Leominster levelled, however, before the interval when Dean Jordan broke clear to beat Fownhope keeper Andrew James from the edge of the area.

At the start of the second period it was Leominster's turn to dominate and Jordan set up Jason Evans to score with a powerful 20-yard drive.

Within two minutes, Evans had the ball in the net again when he raced on to a Daniel Rocke pass to score from a narrow angle.

Evans was unlucky not to complete a treble with a shot which came back off a post but Fownhope almost narrowed the deficit in the closing stages when Matt Goodall forced a good save from McCall.

Ewyas Harold remain close on the leaders' tail after a well-contested 2-1 win over third-placed Westfields.

Harold had the better of the early chances with Danny Johns' shot deflected for a corner and Rob Chandler seeing a shot well saved by Westfields goalkeeper Kevin Chamberlain.

Midway through the half, the villagers were rewarded when John Ferneyhough showed neat control to beat his marker and play the ball through to Chandler who lashed home a fierce drive.

Harold goalkeeper Stuart Turpin saved well from Rod Haslam and Mark Mortlock but the home side also went close to extending their lead when Ryan Tabb's shot was cleared off the line.

Mortlock eventually profited from some defensive indecision to head the equaliser but Harold quickly hit back to claim the winning goal when Nathan Scott fired home a Peter Lamb cross at the far post.

Sutton United fanned their own title aspirations with a 3-0 win at Ledbury Town although they were made to wait for their win with all of the goals coming in the last quarter-of-an-hour.

Fielding a weakened side, Ledbury concentrated largely on defence and their tactics looked as if they might earn a point until they conceded a penalty with 15 minutes to play.

Sean Davies scored from the spot and, within minutes, Tim Powell headed across goal for Darren Jones to have the simple task of tapping the ball home.

Steve Wilkinson rounded off the scoring when he lashed home a fine long-range shot.

Wellington Rangers still harbour hopes of retaining their title after a 7-0 hammering of Hinton.

But if they are to carry off a fourth successive championship they will have to overcome an arduous programme which features 11 games in the next four weeks.

The current champions made a fine start when Richard Jones crossed for Ross McMillan to open the scoring with just five minutes played.

Five minutes later, Jones flicked in an Andrew Clarke header at the far post and then received a pass from Will Perkins to fire in a third.

Jones then resumed his role as provider, getting to the bye-line and squaring for Matthew Pugh to add the fourth before the interval.

After the break, Wayne McNeil took over with three second-half goals. The youngster brought down a pass and turned neatly to fire in his first, added a second after a goalmouth melee and completed his treble after good work by Louis Catley and Perkins.

Lads Club received a welcome bid in their boost to move away from the foot of the table with a 3-1 home win over fellow-strugglers Tupsley.

The visitors took an early lead but Micky Ewins hit back to level before the break.

In the second half, Ben Arnold's strike gave Lads Club the lead before John Buchanan wrapped things up 15 minutes from time.
