DILWYN IN BLOOM- At the January meeting of the parish council, Mrs. Pendleton on behalf of the Royal Horticultural Society outlined the “Britain in Bloom” competition to councillors, suggesting that Dilwyn might enter the village category. Mrs. Pendleton felt that visitors to the village currently cannot help but be impressed with the care of public areas – the village green, churchyard, hedgerows etc and the care villagers take with the appearance of their homes and gardens. An excellent start point which says a creditable entry in the 2009 competition (judging in July) is possible. Councillors acknowledge the need for a small group of villagers to give advice and direction to a project that could include the establishing of conservation and wildlife areas; preserving natural habitat; dealing with environmental issues - street furniture, signage, cleanliness of the street scene; permanent planting and landscaping that could involve the development of a longer term planting plan for the village. This project is more than encouraging villagers on one day of the year to deadhead flowers, mow their lawns and put out hanging baskets! It would be a long term sustainable project bringing the community together and creating a cleaner, greener and environmentally friendly Dilwyn. For Parish Councillors to take this suggestion forward at their February 17th meeting, could villagers please register their interest to becoming involved by speaking to a Parish Councillor or phoning the Parish Clerk, Lynne Pugh on 01432 830737.
