A steering group has been launched to help Ross become a Fairtrade town.

Retailers, consumers and employers with an interest in the cause are invited to a launch meeting at 6.30pm on February 10 at Edde Cross House, Edde Cross Street.

Last year, Ross on Wye Town Council passed a resolution supporting the idea that the t own should try to obtain Fairtrade status. This followed a survey last summer of town centre retailers which showed that 17% were already selling fairly traded articles and that many retailers were keen that the town should attain Fairtrade status.

Fairtrade provides a better deal for producers in developing countries, creating opportunities for farmers and workers to improve their lives, their communities and to protect their environment.

Councillor Jane Roberts says: “Given the high level of interest and activity in Fairtrade here, getting Fairtrade status should be relatively straightforward. "In these difficult economic times, it is good to know that this scheme can bring benefits both to people in Ross and to some of the poorest people in the world. For details, call 01989 563299.
