YOUTH CLUB – The programme of evening events for the youth club this term are as follows: Today (Thursday): St Dwynwen night – Welsh Valentines, Thursday, January 29: Personal safety night, Thursday, February 5: Pancake night, Thursday, February 12: Valentine’s night – pictures and poems and Tuesday, February 17: half term – no youth club. Also every Monday evening from 5.30pm to 7.30pm is sports night at East Radnor Leisure Centre. Next Monday, there is football trraining with Becky in preparation for a football competition coming soon.

LUNCHEON CLUB – Are you over 60 and would like to meet people socially? Then go along and have a lunch at the Baptist Church on Thursdays from noon to 2pm. The two-course lunch costs £3.50. For more information call Ann on 267785.

BURNS NIGHT SUPPER – Don’t forget that The Norton Manor Hotel is celebating Burns Night this Friday with a three-course supper followed by authentic entertainment and dancing by local artistes. FILM SOCIETY – The film Man On Wire (12A) will be shown tomorrow (Friday) at the Assembly Rooms at 8pm. Admission is £4 for adults and £2 for students. For future films visit presteignefilms.org.uk KEEP FIT CLASSES – Carol Bowen and her keep fit classes for the over-60s are back every Tuesday evening from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at The Royal British Legion Club. Pop along and join in and have fun as well as keeping fit. Sessions are £3 and you are urged to wear suitable clothing and take a drink.

THE DEVIL’S VIOLIN – Storyteller Daniel Morden and his band, Oliver Wilson-Dickson on violin, Luke Carver Goss on accordian and Sarah Moody on cello, will be performing gypsy music and tales from Wales and beyond at the Assembly Rooms on Friday, January 30, at 8pm. Tickets are £8 for adults and £5 for children and are available by calling 267163. If you like theatre, world music and storytelling then you will love this. This event is unsuitable for under-10s.

LITTLE NINJAS – Instructor Lee Taylor, 3rd Dan, is taking ‘Little Ninja’ classes for kids aged from four to six every Friday evening at East Radnor Leisure Centre from 5.15pm to 5.45pm. The classes will include respect, confidence, co-ordination and most of all fun. The first two classes are free. LIVE MUSIC – Award-winning banjoist and malian singer Jayme Stone and kora player and vocalist Mansa Sissoko will be playing at the Assembly Rooms today (Thursday) from 8pm. They will be joined by Paul Mathew on bass and Nick Fraser on percussion. Admission is £8. Tickets can be purchased from The Rowan Tree in the High Street or by calling 260292. This is a fundraising event for VSO.

FILM – The film The Duchess (12) will be shown at Lingen Village Hall tomorrow (Friday) at 7.30pm. Admission is £3.50 for adults and £2 for under-16s. Refreshments will be avaliable. They will be staying in a three-star hotel on the promenade on a dinner, bed-and-breakfast basis. The cost is £199 per person based on two sharing. DODGERS NEW KIT – Presteigne Dodgers Netball Club has just received new kit thanks to the kindness of their sponsors Wildgoose and Davies. The Dodgers, who now field two teams Panthers and Pumas, in the Radnor and District Junior Netball League have received new vest tops, skirts and bibs in the club colours of royal blue and yellow. They have also been able to purchase new training bibs, balls and first-aid equipment thanks to the kindness of the customers of The Little Shop, a great effort of a sponsored five-mile run by Dodger Jessie Powell, and much appreciated donations from grandparents of two of the girls. Five players have been selected for the Powys under-14s squad this season: Emily Davies, Jordan Mecke, Izzy Dayas, Kate Gwilt and Lauren Morris. Emily and Ellie Smith have also been selected to play for Westside Netball Club which represents Herefordshire in the West Midlands under-14s league in Walsall most Sundays.

CHARITY QUIZ – New HMSA quiz sheets are now on sale at £1 each. The current theme is the credit crunch using cryptic clues. First prize is a £10 Waterstones gift card. Closing date for entries is March 6. Sheets are available from Emily’s tearoom, Winnie’s newsagent, Carini’s butchers, the Dukes Arms in Presteigne, Norton Manor Hotel bar, Spar and the bookshop in Knighton. Since starting the quizzes last September they have raised £250 in total for charity.
