FRESH from riding another two winners at Hereford Racecourse this week, the long-time Champion Jockey Tony McCoy will soon reach another landmark.

Early next week – or possibly by this weekend – he will ride his 3,000th National Hunt winner.

At 34, he’s almost a veteran in the Weighing Room now, but that will not stop him piling up a total of career victories that it is almost impossible to envisage ever being surpassed.

It was business as usual at Hereford on Monday afternoon when winners number seven and eight for the season at the racecourse were added to McCoy’s tally. The narrowest of defeats in the £25,000 Lindley Caterers Handicap Hurdle – which was a cracker of a race – denied him a hat-trick on the day.

With a local winner-to-runner strike-rate approaching 40%, not only have his fellow riders been losing out to him this season at Hereford, the bookmakers have as well.

Jump racing’s focus switches to Cheltenham this weekend.

Stan, a winner for Kings Caple trainer Venetia Williams on New Year’s Day at the Gloucestershire track, has two possible return trips to Prestbury Park – this Saturday and also in the Ryanair Chase at the National Hunt Festival in March.

Next up at Hereford Racecourse is our ‘winter warmer raceday’ on Sunday, February 8.

An all-inclusive winter warmer £20 ticket includes entry to the grandstand, a glass of mulled wine or pint of beer, cider or lager, a hot pie or pasty, and a raceday programme. The special price makes for a saving of £6.60.

To make the day extra special, places in the Silks Viewing Restaurant are available for £56 (or £61 for window seats), and that includes racecourse admission, a three-course lunch, a table for the afternoon, and a raceday programme.

l The next fixture at Hereford Racecourse is on Sunday, February 8. The first race is off at 1.50pm, with the finale at 4.55pm. Grandstand admission is £17. Accompanied children aged under 16 enter free of charge. More information can be found on web site www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk or by telephoning the racecourse on 01432 273560.
