DILWYN CAROLS-During late December, Dilwyn rang to the sound of carols being sung in streets and houses, as the singers of St. Mary’s Church did their rounds. Those who heard must have been impressed, because they gave more generously than ever before to their charity fund. In all, the magnificent and record sum of £1650 was collected and divided equally between the two causes being supported: Breast Cancer Haven and the Martha Trust. As always, thanks are due to many: the singers themselves and their musical support, most notably the young brass players at Carols on the Green; the Parish Council for its support in organising both the preliminary coffee morning and the much enjoyed Carols on the Green event; the children and staff at Dilwyn School for their involvement; those who hosted events in their homes and Derek Lewis for driving the choir to the various venues and, finally, to the management at Morrisons for allowing the singers into the store. Members of the Parish Council, the choir and two of the hostesses met at the Crown Inn to present cheques for £825 each to representatives of the two charities. The Breast Cancer Haven is self-supporting, relying on support from donations. Director, Jan Marpole said that they are very grateful for the support from Dilwyn and that they have just opened a third Haven which is situated in Leeds and have produced an “Outreach” CD giving information on the Haven, therapy techniques, etc. for those who live far away. Sue McBride, Trust Director of Martha Trust will oversee the purchase of a new bed for their respite care.
