HAY-ON-WYE Primary School pupils are officially all-rounders after adding a permanent Eco Schools flag to their growing list of achievements.

After becoming one of the first schools in Wales to land official Fairtrade status, students and staff have now helped Hay become one of fewer than 10 schools in the country to receive an Eco Schools platinum award.

Sue Richards, Eco Schools co-ordinator, said: “It means we have had good practices for eight-plus years on the environmental side of things, including Fairtrade work we have done, and healthy schools programmes. It’s a celebration of all the good things that have been going on.”

Regular schemes that helped the children secure the accolade include helping with Fairtrade events, launching a campaign to install solar panels at the school and a daily tuck shop that uses ethically and locally sourced products.

Pupils also turned green ambassadors at a county-wide environment day by giving a power-point presentation on their projects to other Powys pupils.
