A TAXI driver was racially abused, assaulted and robbed by some of his passengers in Hereford.
Pete Butcher, police press officer, said the Turkish-born driver picked up four men and a woman in his silver Volkswagen Touran taxi from St Peter’s Square to take to Bobblestock shortly after 2am on Thursday, January 1.
The passengers then changed their destination to Peterchurch and the driver pulled up outside The Green Dragon Hotel in Broad Street.
Mr Butcher said some of the passengers then racially abused him and one punched him in the back of the head twice, removing all the cash from his coat pocket.
The driver got out of the taxi and phoned the police.
The group also alighted and one of them removed the victim’s car keys and threw them in a bin, which has since been recovered.
Police believe some of the suspects went to the bottom of Broad Street and sat on the benches by the cathedral.
