FOUR shops who had their licences suspended for selling alcohol to under-age buyers are now complying with the law.

In May, Herefordshire Council suspended the licences of Nisa in Kington, M and G Wines in Hereford and The Local and Spar, both in Leominster.

But during a recent survey by the council’s trading standards department and West Mercia Police, the shops did not sell to underage purchasers.

Councillor Peter Jones said: “We take our responsibilities very seriously and will suspend, or even revoke licences, if people consistently break the law.”

“I am glad these four premises are now complying with the law and have the correct procedures in place to prevent underage sales from happening in the future.”

But, 19 out of the 56 shops tested were found to be selling alcohol to under-age test purchasers.

West Mercia Police are likely to be seeking licence reviews on three premises which will be dealt with by the council’s regulatory committee at a future meeting.
