Knighton VINTAGE SPORTS CAR EVENT – Over last weekend residents of the Knighton and Presteigne area had a chance to see lots of vintage sports cars taking part in the Welsh Weekend organised by the Vintage Sports Car Club. On the Sunday hundreds of spectators from a wide area turned up at Cwmwhitton Farm near Whitton to look at the cars and watch as all the pre-1931 vehicles tried to get as far up hills as they could with their passengers bouncing up and down to try and keep the cars climbing. In the farm building, locals served refreshments and there was a donation box near the car park gate. The event raised £150 each for the Dame Anna Childs Primary School, Whitton, and the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL – As part of the Amnesty International fundraising week, Knighton and district Amnesty group held a concert of words and music at the Methodist Church last week. An Amnesty concert has been held every October for many years and has always featured the Corndon Singers. This year there was a slight alteration to the format, with the introduction of words and music between the songs. The Corndon Singers performed an amazingly versatile selection of unaccompanied choral music, ranging from early Renaissance church music through to jazz and modern spiritual music. Between the Corndon Singers’ sets there were interludes of words and music. Tony Walton, a Wigmore poet, read some of his latest poems based upon themes of freedom and liberty. Tony also sold copies of his volumes of poetry, donating half the proceeds to Amnesty International and the other half to the Ethiopian Appeal. Kirsten Hillier on the violin, accompanied by John Langstaff on a variety of musical instruments, gave virtuoso performances of Gaelic music. All the musical instruments had been made by John and these included Kirsten’s violin and the bagpipe-like instrument that he produced for one piece of Irish music.

The audience was delighted by the high standard of performances. All performers donated their time and expertise to raising funds for Amnesty International. Grateful thanks are given for this generosity and for the exceptional standard of the concert. The concert raised £250. This sum includes donations from members of the audience as well as ticket sales.
