REPAIR work to one of Herefordshire's oldest bridges has been announced.

Mordiford Bridge, in Mordiford, will be closed while Herefordshire Council’s contractors Amey Wye Valley carry out work to rebuild damaged parapets.

Mordiford Bridge is a scheduled ancient monument and permission has been obtained from English Heritage to carry out the work which involves taking down the upstream parapet and rebuilding it.

The work will be carried out on four Sundays in August. It will involve four road closures on the B4224 on August 3, 10, 17 and 24.

Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “These essential bridge repairs necessitate the closure of the road for several days.

"We are proposing to carry out the work on four consecutive Sundays, thus keeping disruption to a minimum by keeping it open throughout for the other six days a week when it is needed most.

“I would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused on what is a well used route but the bridge has been damaged by vehicles knocking it and we have to carry out this essential work before it gets any worse, thereby substantially reducing the potential for a far more disruptive emergency closure.”
