HISTORICAL SOCIETY – The Historical Society AGM will take place next Monday at 7.45pm in the village hall. The society has had a successful season with an average attendance of around 60. The committee would like to thank all the speakers who came this year, and also the parish magazines and the local newspaper which have given us publicity. After the annual meeting, Janet and Mark Robinson will present more ‘Tales from the Rectory’ based on the home life of the Rev Webb of Hardwick.

SUMMER CONCERT – The concert, held on Friday, June 20, was a great success. The WI would like to thank all those who took part especially the children from Longtown School who sang and acted so well. Dr Jim’s mermaid, John Games’ singing, the Freeland Duo’s music, Don Coates, our own Frankie Howerd, the inimitable Frank and Donald, Christine Williams’ trip to Barry, Bill Davison’s haunting melodies and the Clodock Choir all made for a wonderful evening of entertainment. Thanks must go to Mrs Hvass and all those who worked so hard behind the scenes. The sum of £605 was raised for Longtown School and Barrs Court School.

OPEN GARDEN – The Griggs in Newton St Margaret’s is open every Tuesday afternoon until July 29, from 2pm to 6pm. All monies raised will go to the charities recognised by the national gardens scheme.

SCHOOL FETE – The fete will take place tomorrow (Friday) from 4pm to 7pm in the school grounds. There will be stalls, food and fun for everybody so please come and support this event.

THE THIRD DARREN’S DASH – This took place on a rather damp and gloomy day on June 21. Fifty-four people took up the challenge and succeeded. Twenty children turned out to beat the ‘running banana’ around the one- and two-kilometre courses. There was a great atmosphere and a good crowd turned up to cheer everyone on. A total of £900 was raised for the World Cancer Research fund and the Longtown OEC Bursary fund. Mike Fawcett, head of the centre, would like to thank all the generous sponsors and supporters who made this event such a success. The next Dash will be June 21 next year.
