A LONG-lost city pub still holds a special place in the memories of those who knew it, over 10 years on from its demolition.

The Bridge Inn, once a familiar sight on College Road in Hereford, was demolished in 2015, three years after it poured its last pint.

Despite its closure, fond memories continue to flow from former patrons who remember it as a lively gathering spot.

In 2012, when the pub was closed, it was reported that the last pint could be served from the building, after a planning application was submitted to build 14 homes on the site. Outline planning permission for 13 homes was given the green light by planners later that year.

CAMRA objected at the time, with Herefordshire representative Mark Haslam submitting an objection. Mr Haslam said although he acknowledged that three previous tenants of the pub had to surrender their leases due to declining trade, it was his view that this could be turned around under freehold ownership.

One of the closest pubs, Karlo's between Widemarsh Street and Newtown Road, which is now Signature Interiors, had also recently closed, leaving locals without another pub.

Another nearby pub, The Heart of Oak, would also close its doors years later, with proposals to turn it into a children's home given the green light in 2020.

Members of the We Grew Up in Hereford group have fondly remembered the Bridge Inn, which is now lost to time.

Peter Davies recalled happy times at the pub, where his grandfather was landlord for more than 18 years during the 1960s and 1970s.

Peter Bullar said: "Was our meeting place in the mid-1970s for us Bikers. "First taste of a beer or Shandy. "Then we ride off into the sunset to a Disco all around Herefordshire."

Andy Collier commented: "Dad used to take us kids either there or the Three Elms for a Vimto in the 60s on a Sunday to get us out of Mum's hair while she was preparing lunch."

Judith Techman recalled a childhood tradition.

She said: "I remember it well, we lived in College Road and as a youngster I used to get a bottle of beer for my Dad every Friday, no problems in those days with me being underage."

Woody Day said: "Was my local back in the day. "College Rovers meeting place! Great memories, played darts and pool as well."

David Harding recalled how he had worked for the former landlord, Trevor Ford, during his tenure at The Gamecock Inn in Holme Lacy Road, which is now a Tesco Express shop.

Bruce Darby said he had managed to visit the pub before it was demolished to have a reunion with his former Sun Valley colleagues who had worked with in the 1960s.
