ALEX YOLSHIN-CASH cherished a Commonwealth debut to savour after rounding off his campaign in Glasgow.
The Uttoxeter gymnast, 20, narrowly missed out on a medal on the horizontal bars with a fourth-place finish at the city’s International Arena. But he will still return to the East Midlands with pride, having been part of the England team to win silver and also reaching the final on the parallel bars.
Yolshin-Cash, who started his gymnastics journey at Uttoxeter Gymnastics Club, had multiple members of family in the crowd and will never forget his maiden experience on the big stage. He has learned huge lessons and hopes to use this as a platform for progression as he embarks on his senior career.
“I came in hoping for the best,” he said, speaking after his horizontal bars competition. Obviously it didn’t quite go my way but to finish on that high bar routine, with my family here watching, was a great way to finish the Games.
“I could see them in the crowd – they’d come up for the qualification when we won the team medal as well.
“It’s been a really incredible moment – I owe it all to my parents, sisters, whole support network and Uttoxeter Gymnastics Club where I started, plus everyone who has supported me throughout my journey.
“I’ve learned a lot this week and the ups and downs definitely help – it’s all a learning process and it will all make me stronger and more experienced in the future.”
Yolshin-Cash is one of 251 Team England athletes here in Glasgow supported by National Lottery funding, with Sport England investment for Glasgow totalling an approximate 9.5m.
And in addition to Uttoxeter, his family and coaches, he paid tribute to all those that help support his burgeoning journey.
“The National Lottery funding means everything to me,” he added. “As athletes, funding is such a fundamental part of it to enable you to train at the highest level.
“A big thank you to all the players – we couldn’t do it without you.”
Thanks to National Lottery players, more than £33m is raised every week for good causes. It’s because of you that sport, arts, heritage and community projects, as well as our athletes competing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, are supported across the UK.
