A LANDLORD and lady are bidding a "bittersweet" farewell to a pub they have run for more than a year.
Tracey and Steve Powell called last orders at The Retreat on the High Street in Ledbury for the final time on Saturday (June 27).
After 19 months at the helm, the pair have decided to move on as Mr Powell faces health issues.
A tough time for pubs
Mrs Powell also blamed the ongoing cost of living crisis for their departure, saying rising utility bills are "killing" hospitality.
"We were really well supported during the weekend but hospitality is struggling generally," she said. "It's the cost of living. Utilities are really killing it."
The pair have previously shared the reality of running a pub in an era of spiralling costs, when they told customers last year that they would be axing their food menu.
Farewell to staff and customers
Despite the pub's challenges, Mrs Powell said she would miss the friendships she had made during their time at The Retreat.
She also wanted to thank staff, entertainers and loved ones for their support.
"It's bittersweet," the landlady said. "I've made so many good friends and my phone has constantly been pinging so I'm definitely going to miss that side of it.
"We really appreciate the support we've had. The customers will be missed, as well as entertainers, friends, family and staff."
In an extended message shared on the pub's Facebook page, the couple said: "To our customers, friends, suppliers, entertainers and everyone who has helped us over the last 19 months – thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
"Your kindness, loyalty and support have meant more than words can ever express."
