AN ANCIENT tradition was revived in Hereford last month as walkers gathered for a 38km trek.
The historic Beating of the Bounds of Hereford City took place on May 20, St Ethelbert’s Day, with participants including some from as far as Denmark.
The event, which marks the city's boundaries, was last completed in 1993 and 2004.
Despite being a significant tradition dating back to the Anglo Saxons, it had faded from the annual calendar, prompting a small group to aim to restore it as a larger, charity-led event.

Extensive research was necessary to re-establish the route, with significant support from the mayor's office, particularly John Marshall.
The walkers, led by Bernard MacGregor, Joe Cole, Andrew Berekdar, and Foz, took just over eight hours to complete the route, uncovering boundary and franchise stones along the way.
At the end of the walk, Barrels pub provided complimentary beer as a traditional 'payment' for the walkers from the city.
Organisers hope to continue the revived tradition, encouraging anyone aware of boundary stones or interested in participating in the 2027 walk to email herefordhfcic@gmail.com.
