Herefordshire Council has given an update on its clear-up operation at the former travellers’ site at the A49/A44 roundabout near Leominster, as it considers taking action against “waste offences” by its former occupiers.
Travellers vacated the site last November following legal action by the council, since when the extensive area covered with household waste was fenced off but otherwise left untouched.
That was until contractors with multiple vehicles began clearing the site at the end of March, which is still ongoing.

“Given the scale of the material on site and the need to ensure it is handled safely and in line with environmental regulations, the clean-up will be carried out in stages,” a council spokesperson said.
“Waste removed from the site will be taken away by licensed contractors and disposed of through the appropriate regulated waste management processes.”

Asked how long this was likely to take, they said: “At this stage, it is difficult to give a precise timescale while the work is underway, but the council is aiming to clear the site as quickly and safely as possible.”
“We would like to thank residents for their patience while this work is carried out.”
And they added: “The council’s Community Protection Team is also investigating potential fly-tipping and waste offences linked to the dumping of rubbish at the site.”
